Mendocino Farms Farm to Table Partnerships

Yes “Farm to Table” is a major trend right now, although have you heard of a Farm to table sandwich shop? Mendecino Farms has been widely successful in Los Angeles by creating delicious sandwiches made from ingredients directly sourced from local farms. They have also developed relationships with artisan food producers who focus on small batch food production. For me the result was undeniable, Medecino Farms made some of my favorite sandwiches that I have tasted.

Farm Partnerships

Some of the farm partnerships Mendocino farms has developed includes Scarborough Farms, which produces their heirloom tomatoes, greens and herbs. Drake Family Farms provides their goat cheese and they name all 300 of their goats.  Creminelli produces their prosciutto, which is made only with heritage breed pork and sea salt. The prosciutto tastes amazing! The other notable farm is Petaluma Poultry which provides free-range chicken.

Chef Judy Han

The menu created by Chef Partner Judy Han features adventurous takes on traditional sandwiches like the features adventurous takes on traditional sandwiches. I met Chef Judy and she is a rockstar in the Kitchen. I watched her work in the kitchen with her crew, she was focused and extremely patient as she trained the crew. It was cool to watch.

Food that I tried at Mendocino Farms

Summer Cubano

Their Cubano is made with low braised carnitas, prime honey ham, Mendo mustard, housemade dill pickles, Cuban mojo sauce, local crispy plantains on Drago Bakery soft roll. I liked this interpretation of the classic Cubano. They kept the sandwich light on the palate, so it was very easy to polish it off in no time.  $8.95

“Not So Fried” Chicken

This is a healthier “Fried” chicken sandwich. It is made with shaved, roasted free range chicken rolled in crispy polenta, herb aioli, mustard pickle slaw, tomatoes, pickled red onions on toasted ciabatta with a side of chipotle BBQ sauce. This was my absolute favorite sandwich! I really like fried chicken sandwich and this version allows me to enjoy the flavor and textures without requiring me to take anti cholesterol drugs afterwards.  $9.65

 Kurobuta Pork Belly Banh Mi

This spin on the classic Vietnamese sandwich is made with braised, caramelized Kurobuta pork belly, housemade pickled daikon & carrots, cilantro, cucumbers, jalapenos, chili aioli on panini grilled ciabatta. This sandwich is my #2 favorite. The x-factor in this sandwich was the pork belly, it was trimmed and grilled just right. You can really taste and appreciate the wonderful flavors of the belly, without getting distracted by the fat. The result is a very well balanced and delicious sandwich.  $10.45

Prosciutto & Free Range Chicken

A nice chicken and pig combination sandwich. It is made with Creminelli prosciutto & shaved, roasted free range chicken breast with local Gioia fresh mozzarella, crushed honey roasted almonds, basil pesto, balsamic vinegar, tomatoes on panini grilled ciabatta. This is also a good sandwich, but my favorite part of it was the Creminelli Prosciutto. $9.85

The Santa Monica Chinese Chicken Salad

This modern spin on the Chinese chicken sald is made with miso mustard sesame dressing with free range chicken breast, spinach cabbage slaw, Scarborough Farm’s mixed greens, scallions, cilantro, toasted almonds, crispy wontons. I love the balance of flavors in this salad and just the right amount of crispies. $10.95

Save Drake Farm’s Salad

This salad is made with roasted free range chicken breast, Herbs de Provence marinated Drake Family Farm’s goat cheese, pink lady beets, green apples, dried cranberries, honey roasted almonds, red onions, Scarborough Farm’s greens, butter lettuce & romaine with citrus vinaigrette. It was good, but not as delicious as the Chinese chicken salad. I would give it a chance, but I recommend the former.  $10.75

My Final Thoughts about Medocino Farms

Mendocino Farms is definitely worth a try and I highly recommend it to my readers. My suggestions are the Bahn mi Pork belly, “Not So Fried” chicken sandwich and The Santa Monica Chinese Chicken Sandwich. Their location on 17th Street in Costa Mesa was a terrific choice, as this street is quickly becoming a foodie destination. If you visit, leave a rating below and let me know about your experience.
